The Course
This four year BA programme (CAO Code AH002) enables students to achieve a competence in Theology and Psychology. At registration students may opt to take their degree either on a Theology Major basis with Psychology as a subsiderary subject or on a Joint Major basis where they will have equal credits in Theology and their other chosen subjects.

What is Theology?
Theology is talk about the experience of God. Over four years, students study and dialogue with the Christian understanding of the experience of God as reflected historically in the Scriptures, Church teachings and the work of outstanding theologians.

Courses in practical and moral theology consider the meaning of the Christian response in increasingly complex socio-historical contexts.

Attention is also paid to Ecumenism and what Christianity can learn from other Faiths.

Courses in Philosophy are taken in Year One and, in their second year, students participate in a field placement and reflect on their experience of e.g. teaching, youth work, prison work, communications, hospital visitation. This helps students integrate theology and life.

What is Psychology?

The fascinating study of the mind (the Psyche or soul) and human behaviour is the subject matter of Psychology at All Hallows College. It involves the study of people, with all their complex thoughts and feelings, living in an increasingly complex social world. The nature of human thought and emotion and the influence of others on our behaviour, from birth onwards, are key topics. Understanding such complex processes requires both a critical approach and the use of scientific principles and procedures and students receive a strong grounding in research methods at All Hallows. Over the four years of the degree students come to understand the biological bases of behaviour; how we learn and adapt to our world; how and why we form and maintain relationships and what factors influence our physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.  This degree has been designed to meet the specific requirements laid down by the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) for accredited courses and the Department of Psychology is in the process of seeking accreditation.
