The Doll House Project - helping a Carmelite Aid Programme

The Doll House Project and All Hallows College:

The Doll House Project grew out of efforts to promote hand-made goods from the Phillipines.

In the late 1970s a group of Carmelite Sisters responded to the treatment of women in the 'sweatshops'. They taught women to make reversable dolls: Red Riding Hood that could change into the Big Bad Wolf, for example. The project took off, demand grew and now over 36 story dolls are made in their own, custom-designed workshop. Since 2000, a series of 'Old Testament' dolls has been produced.

List of Dolls

All dolls are priced at €32 each. Profits from the enterprise are used for:

  • Interest-free loans to the workers to build homes
  • Providing Education for the workers and their children
  • Assisting the Sisters in running their centres for people with Leprosy. The centre in Tala is the largest leprosarium in the Phillipines.

Some of the construction work facilitated by the Doll House Project. Many families could otherwise not afford to have a home.

This is a photo of the workers receiving books, uniforms, umbrellas etc so that their children are equipped for school.

The Cloth Books and Bunny House Toys

Also in the Phillipines, a similar project was begun by Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. Here, the workers produce cloth books: The Quiet Book, The Lullaby Book, The Animal Train, as well as the Bunny House, Noah's Ark and other toys. These also sell for €32 each. Also available is a range of Pyjama Bags in pink, blue & yellow (€20 each).

The All Hallows Connection

The products from these centres are sold by a volunteer group in Japan, one of whom, Ann Fukumoto, was born in Ireland and whose sister works in All Hallows College. As a result, the PFM course in All Hallows has volunteered to distribute the toys in Ireland.
